📨 Weekly digest: 20 2024 | Is AI a threat or an opportunity?
How to decide? | AI this week in the news; use cases; for the techies
Hello friends, and welcome to the weekly digest, week 20 of 2024.
This week’s question: “Is AI a threat or an opportunity?”
Is AI a threat to disrupt our industries or an opportunity to propel humanity forward?
While exploring recent developments and considerations for responsible AI implementation, we realize how complex the landscape is.
The field of AI is bustling with activity, with hundreds, if not millions, of companies and researchers vying for breakthroughs.
However, amidst this fervent competition, a crucial aspect seems to be missing: a champion for inclusion, equity, and accessibility.
While the focus is on building the most advanced algorithms, the question of who benefits from these advancements and how they can be used fairly and for everyone seems to be an afterthought.
This lack of emphasis on inclusivity threatens to exacerbate existing inequalities and leave a significant portion of the population behind in the AI revolution.
And, while careful—cautious—consideration is essential when developing General AI (GenAI), its true power lies not in replacing us but in amplifying our capabilities.
The fear of AI taking jobs is a valid concern. However, the landscape will likely shift towards those with the skills to harness AI's potential.
Doctors already use AI to diagnose patients faster (see below), and engineers leverage AI for complex design tasks. AI has become a powerful tool, but the human element remains paramount.
Many questions remain unanswered but in the AI-powered future, the people who understand AI, can effectively integrate it into workflows, and can interpret its insights will truly thrive.
What do you think? Is AI a threat or an opportunity?

🦾 AI elsewhere on the interweb
Google DeepMind announced a new model that can predict the structure of ‘all’ molecules used as building blocks for life (not just proteins, but DNA, RNA and others). It doesn’t get much attention, but AI is a very big deal for medical research.
Sam Altman said no, not GPT5, not search, but something else! The other rumour is a voice assistant on X.
One clause in the Model Spec says that OpenAI is exploring whether and how it might be OK for ChatGPT to create adult content. Google lets you search for it, with filters, after all on NPR
