During this transition period, the delimitations between reality and artificiality are being blurred as to what these different types of complexity mean in practice and how they should be incorporated into our decision-making process.
When the results from AI systems are presented alongside intervals on crucial quantities of interest (pools of entities), are these digits that should build confidence and elicit action? How should we behave? Who are we in an artificial world? Or are we merely by-products that cannot help but inherit the opacity of the model from which we were derived?
The prevalence of AI systems demands data experts adapt the foundational theory to remain applicable to increasingly complex models, changing how researchers characterize and quantify uncertainty. And foremost, replace humans at the center of every decision.
