The growing consensus is that progress in artificial intelligence will stall if computers don't improve at grappling with cause and effect.
Today, AI's capacity cannot infer what will result from a given action.
Machines could have applied what they had learned in one domain to another if humans didn't have to train them on everything anew all the time.
In other words, machines would eventually decide for us if they could understand certain things and lead to other things.
Until then, we have time.
